It looked like halfway through the race Hamilton stopped being slow for a bit and then started it again near the end, I think that's where he went wrong.

Because it was his only chance. If he doesn't do it, Rosberg is champion. If he does then maybe he'd still win the race with Rosberg out or Rosberg 4th, and maybe he wouldn't have got a penalty or the penalty wouldn't have been too severe. He had absolutely nothing to lose, except maybe like Schumacher second in the championship which I'm sure he doesn't care about. And don't forget who Hamilton's hero is.

Hamilton had to be pretty careful when he judged trying to back Rosberg up.
The team made it clear that if he backed up Rosberg they'd pit Rosberg early and the undercut there would be enough for him to pass Hamilton.
To make the back up tactic work he needed to wait till after the last pitstop when the team could no longer influence it like that. He would also have had to be confident his car was in decent enough shape for a bit of a scrap because he was inviting Rosberg to step into a dogfight with him

Given their history, it's more likely that Rosberg would be the one hitting Hamilton than the other way around.

Late in the race, he said Mercedes should tell Hamilton to let him pass and he would then return the favour at the end of the final lap, so Hamilton won the race. For a champion driver, it was embarrassing.

Merc will not raise any sanctions again Hamilton.

They may talk a lot in the press, but if their car is less than stellar next season then they will need Mr Hamilton's services as their world champion will not be up to the task.

Mercedes would have been right royally pissed off if the ersatz German had been beaten to the crown by a Brit.

How do you work that one out?

Rosberg - Austria and Spa 2014
Hamilton - Bahrain 2014, Austin 2015, Canada 2016

Hamilton 3-2 up in the pushing of the circuit stakes.

Simple. Rosberg has been penalised twice this season for causing collisions (Austria and Malaysia).

That's also the only 2 times he's tried to overtake someone this season
