I have to admit to being mightily impressed when I saw the instrument display in the 2010 Range Rover on Top Gear - a 12" TFT LCD display no less - with virtual analogue instruments.
Coincidentally, I read in Autocar that there are legislative moves to restrict the graphics on vehicle displays to static images - it is suggested this will have serious ramifications for Sat-Nav systems and presumably these rather trick LCD instrument displays - if they're using analogue graphics then the graphics have to 'move'.
It would nice to have LCD instruments with variable 'skins' - Jaeger, Smiths, Veglia Borletti or even 1950's Delco styles - all at the touch of the screen.

Fine, stick a static image of the speedo at 30mph and when you are pulled up in court, simply say that your instruments are functioning to 'Government Legislation'.
They really outdo themselves in 'wankerisms'.
Of course, reading a map whilst navigating through dense 40mph city outskirts traffic is FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR safer than a satnav with a little animation on it telling you to make a turn in a counting down distance...
I heard about a company recently that have instructed a vehicle manufacturer to supply them with cars that have the sat nav etc turned off. Trying to remember which company it was - someone like Sony or a company on that scale. They have decided that they are a distraction. Will have to google and find out who it was.
Does "static image" mean something like what we see above on the LR? Essentially a fixed display with the dials moving.
I guess they want to legislate against displays where the dials are moving around or somesuch. Or where you can select different sets of dials (all whilst moving).
...Shell, which has a worldwide fleet of 14,000 cars, is telling carmakers it wants in-built satellite navigations systems disabled while a car is in motion.
It means the navigation systems could only be used when the car is stationary and would have a blank screen when the car begins to move – in the same way as in-built televisions disable themselves.
The voice instructions would still operate, but the driver would be unable to view the map...
I just love how these decisions are made with ZERO research
Like our dear Fluffy says - 'Knowledge without mileage = Bullsh1t'
If the Government really wanted to save RTAs based on distractions, they'd prevent children from the ages of 2 - 8 being allowed in a car for a period of over 10 mins.
Indeed. Accidents are the largest cause of children.
This is all irrational; there would be fewer accidents if people looked away from their speedos and out the windows, like we did before speed tax terrorism tookk over.
Completely agree - too much time is spent checking the speedo rather than looking at the road ahead and obstructions / dangers etc. I know when going through average speed cameras I am constantly looking down to ensure I don't speed.
Was following a woman the other day who appeared to not be paying any attention to anything other than the devil child she had in the back throwing what looked like a hissy fit with their DVD player attached to the back of her seat. Needless to say I stayed well back from her!
