Gallardo fires
This was brought to my attention on last weeks Top Gear and I've done a quick search of the internet and there do seem to be quite a few cases, possibly disproportionate to the number of vehicles on the road.
However, I've not been able to identify if there is a common cause. This is quite upsetting, as I've set my heart on having one (the car, not the fire) and I'm now slightly put off getting one if its likely to end up as a pile of ash, at the side of the road.
It would be comforting to know that Lamborghini (Audi) have identified a common cause and developed a solution.
Any ideas?

Most R8s have the V8 whereas the Lambo has the V10.
Recently R8s come with V10 but I think the fires happened with the V8 so overall unrelated.
Regardless, I don't think it's the engine itself catching fire but something else in the engine bay.
Also, not sure how much is exaggerated or not, plenty of "normal" cars suffer the same fate but never make the news. Alternatively, there could be a design issue and it really is a problem!!

A Ford Mongdeo catching would hardly make the news and i cant imagine many people queuing up to video it on their phone! Probably a cooling problem, since V10 supercars like the Gallardo, although easy to drive, arent designed for driving round a town centre at 20mph. The Murcielago has cooling vents that come up at a certain temperature or can be operated manually by the driver but i really cant imagine they are happy driving round at town speeds in hot weather!
And yes, Audi and Lambo engines are related, something like they use the same block but most components i think are different. The V10 R8 has only just been launched but as with the S6/RS6 using the V10, its not a shoehorned in Lambo engine as all. Audi sticks on 2 turbos in the 572bhp RS6, the LP560 Gallardo makes its power from NA.
