Default Gatso head on flash

I was flashed yesterday head on, approaching a Gatso, for the first time. Best of it was, I wasn't even speeding and the thing shocked me, that it nearly caused an accident, you know, you see a flash and slam the anchors of, like in instinct to a near stop, nearly causing the car behind to hit me!

Not even a gatso my side, it was facing me, and the thing flashed as I was right by it, feel like ranting to someone official, that cannot be safe. In a perverse way, I sort of wish the car behind arse ended me, would have made for an interesting argument with officialdom.

May still complain to someone

Col, do you mean a Truvelo camera, rather than a Gatso?

Truvelo camera

We motorbike riders love them

EDIT: The Truvelo doesn't give a visible flash so it can't have been one of those.

Craig, no, def a Gatso, it was in a place very close to home and was a large in the face flash. Never happened before.

I googled it for a bit and found a few pictures of the unit that lives inside the housing and it has a 3 way switch for the directions it attacks, one setting is 'both directions'. In the UK it is not approved as a device for forward facing prosecution.

What I don't understand is that I was under the limit unless the camera sensor is f cked.

Craig,
quite an interesting pic here:

Look at the red button and yellow switch, middle, you can vaguely see the setting to the right of it:

The directions that it 'attacks'.

maybe stating the obvious, but was the camera flashing another car going in the opposite direction?

TBH, maybe although I can't remember. I think something is not right with the camera and makes one question all the other captures and their validity in the recent time.

IIRC there are three types of 'dummy' unit that can be put in a 'normal' Gatso as opposed to a proper camera.

The two cheaper dummy units are not as accurate but will also flash things towards if they think it's speeding. I have been flashed doing about 25mph towards one and yes, it is a bit of a surprise !!

The dearer dummy unit acts completely like a normal working camera and is very accurate. They use alot of the cheapest dummy units as they are about 10 times cheaper than a proper camera.

Maybe it was flashing something the other way, maybe it's just shagged ....

Perhaps the one that 'got' you was something else? A Gatso gone wrong?

I think it must be a dodgy unit. The unit was shaped externally like a gatso, it had Gatso written on it but it could have different guts I suppose!
