Default German Number Plates

These seem to have exploded around here lately. At first it was mainly vintage VW drivers, then a broader VW following, now a seemingly even more eclectic following.

Are they non-GATSO recognisable or something?

I'd guess at ANPR stuff not being able to recognise it properly.

John maybe able to advise??

Some people say it's for looks, but who knows?

are they legal on UK registered cars though? (i presume we're talking UK reg on german plate)

same issue as the funny fonts & mis-spacing that have been outlawed over the last decade.

im guessing here, but UK reg, on a kraut plate = deception, since the cops will be looking on the german registration system?

I thought it looked quite cool on the first GTi I saw with it on. It even had a WOB registration (Wolfsburg in German).

But like everything trendy, it's become hackneyed and is now the antithesis of

It's legal.

There's a loophole in the law that says UK number plates must meet the EU standard. ie ANY EU standard. You could have french if you wanted.

Yeah pressed metal euro plates look the part German motors, I was a VW nut previously & these seemed popular. Not sure it suits a Jap car though.

The general consensus seemed to be that they were illegal but it's luck of the draw as to whether you get pulled for them, a few people got stung with a fine if I recall. As with illegal spacing I suppose. Out of interest I parked bang opposite a Police ANPR unit in a car park a few weeks ago with S2000 xx on my plate & no one raised an eyebrow.

The idea of it on a Japanese car is so missing the point:

He's a wascal!

And a wobber!

And a wapist!

And a pickpocket...
