Default Going to the ring...

Bit of a Top gear type challenge I need some help with.

Need to buy (and mod if nessesary) a car for under £1000 to drive to the ring and do a quick lap or two. Preferably it will hold together to drive back, but that's not essential.

I'm a bit skint but I do have a access to a workshop and have some mechanical ability and help. Trying to keep car purchase cost under £500 which basically means a scrapper which I can coax a few fast miles out of.

The ring would benefit a bit of bhp but maybe I just need to concentrate on getting there and getting round in one piece!

So what do you think? prelude, crx, golf, mr2, mx5, mx3...

Mx5 would be great but not to comfortable.
Clio 1.8 16v would be a good buy if you can find one with a rusty shell
e36 BMW with high mileage.
Honda prelude?

something French or German so it will be a lot easier to get fixed if it breaks down at any stage there or back

Its not often I do this - I agree with gaddafi. You may even find some dead examples next to the Ring for spares if you're lucky.

So what's story behind this mission to the Ring?

MK2/3 Golf. Spares are everywhere.

You will really struggle to find French/Jap spares around the ring in the same way that you can find German spares.

Other option is BMW.

If you do go to the ring in a banger, please please please ensure that there's no leaking fluids anywhere.

And finally, you're better off with some decent tyres than power at the ring.

Quite enough people have come off on other people's fluid leaks. Some fatally. Touristfahren - public laps are dangerous enough without drivers in improperly maintained cars and bikes driving/riding around the 'Ring.

The oldtimer GP was fantastic this gone weekend. But the amount of oil dropped by them was a bit scary.

£500 will easily get you something ! so much to choose from up to the 1k mark - even an old x2ri or 1.9 205 ! many things spring to mind ,
