Default Golf 5 GTD

So maybe you lot are right. Had the Golf about 18 months now, check oil level comes on so i top up.
Still the light is on. Annoying.
Its not low.

Anyone experience of this? Oil was low as i've mot checked it, it being a diseasel and all.

Apparently it can be a faulty bonnet switch, it looks to see if you've popped it before reset. Pretty dumb imo

Dunno, my mate had a 170 and it was a big bag of trouble. Was basically back at VW to get problems sorted out every month. It wouldn't start in one go after having stood still for a few days etc.

If it turns into a duffer dunno what to replace it with. The missus likes small cars but with a nice interior.

Think the 170 has a bigger turbo but not sure

What year? The 140 had trouble with head from 04-07, look up 'porous head' you'll unearth all sorts, the one strapped in my old a3 went bang and wanted a new head, watch out for coolant loss, if it starts get rid ASAP as thick end of 2k to fix. The 170 had trouble with the dual mass flywheel apparently. One dealer told me he won't touch any of the 170's as they are nothing but trouble. Funny how all these VAG's are seen as reliable good cars by the general public?

Nice cars, but seem to carry baggage!

It's an 08. They do get a bad rap abroad.

We'll see, I won't tolerate reliability issues even if Doris loves it. I'm struggling to think of a replacement non badge though. Maybe an MPS3

Is that the only fault nott? I've had an 08 1.9 for over a year, its been no worse than anything else I've had.
It's high mileage, I replaced the timing belt, water pump etc last month about £130. Replaced the clutch and
converted to a standard flywheel late last year, kit was about £350 from Eurocarparts.

There is a lot of scare mongering on the internet about these.

The 170's if treated correctly are no less reliable than any other model - they tend to get a pasting being the 'performance model' of the diesels, and abused.

The head issue is a lot more an Audi issue than VW issue, although it can effect VW's, I have yet to see one that has had a head issue.

I'd imagine the OP's issue will be the oil level sensor at a guess - it can be the bonnet lock, but is more common on the Mk4's than Mk5's.

Flywheels can be an issue on the 140's as well as the 170's, but the part number superseeded a good 5 years ago, so most that have had clutches have had the newer better flywheel - then again I'v seen early cars on originals that are still fine.

Phil, I can't believe that dealer told you they steered clear of 170's - ludicrous IMO, we look after so so many, and 99.9% have been fine.

Remember, there maybe 200, 300 - even 500 people who may post up on forums that therre car is having issues - the other 500,000 cars our there don't come on to say 'mine is fine today' - issues can be over exaggerated.

My expereience of this is I am parts manager for a VW garage, and have worked for VW for 12 years now.

I hear what you are saying but of those 500,000 there will be plenty who have problems but don't post it up on the Internet as well.

Anyway, get it to a reputable specialist or dealer and see what they diagnose.
