Actually Ron, the Ferrari V8 also sounds like a bag of shite at idle. Like two knackered X-1/9s. Kind of makes up for it under load over 4,000 RPM though.

I'm happy with offset-crank V8s. Most US engines (and a LOT of Ford Europe) engines all sound shit, because of the crappy cast-iron heads/headers and the CGAF.

LJKS once wrote an interesting piece on how the extra pipes on a Ferrari Daytona's exhaust system gave it harmonics very similar to his clarinet. It's no accident that Italian V8s sound sooooo much better too!
ah yes mr graves.

but i prefer a motorhead gig to last night at the proms.

i really would like to hear what an m3v8 sounds like angry.

i heard what mine sounds like from the back for the first time yesterday.

true.

i also think that the firing order makes a difference to the sound of the engine.

an old cosworth v8 sounds like an f20c with the airbox cover off.imo.

i would love to see that horizon programme again.

as i recall it hinted at ferarri bais by the fia.

i am right about the noise though

i might be wrong but i think the cossie fired two cylinders at the same time.so it would sound a bit like a four.

Well, there's always the first tvelve bars of "Stairway to Heaven" to f uck up that argument! OK, it's a bass flute & not a clarinet, but the point remains the same (?)

Anyway, something like a 7.4-litre Cobra engine running straight pipes in Can-Am form makes such an earthquake-from-hell sound, the opening bars of "Black Sabbath" sounds distinctly bubblegum by comparison, although the effect is all serious syncopation and not at all tonal.

An M3 in full flight sounds simply brilliant. V8 off-beat not unlike like two F20cs duelling, but with the usual BMW baritone zing overlaid. I'm minded of "Freebird" for some reason. It's complex and rather good.

you mean "the song remains the same".

squidward out of spongebob plays the clarinet and he is not cool.

have i mentioned the fact that my engine sounds like my old 1.1 fiesta at idle when the bonnet is open.

The M V10 engine sounds like a diesel at idle.

And my straight 6 sounds like it's too metallic at times. But awesome through a tunnel.

I'd love a V8 but my dream next car has a dry sumped water cooled flat 6.
