I just watched that video last night. It's great to hear that everyone will survive such an awful crash. I was a bit surprised to see the marshal stood there, he's in a very exposed position.

I just can't watch the end of that video. The way they treat that driver is nothing short of disgraceful. From memory the guy sued the track for their negligence. The race should have been stopped due to bad weather conditions, it took far too long to put the fire out, and there were not enough medically trained personal at the track.

Yeah, we studied that video at uni. The general concensus was that they took their time getting to the driver because they assumed that no-one could survive being in that situation. The second theory was to do with Japan's class system at the time. Many of the lower 'class' marshalls were waiting on the opinions of the main marshalls for advice and there were none about at the time of the incident. They normally waited on the instruction of the main marshalls for advice on what to do, so it was chaos when there were none about, (if you get what I mean). I heard that the driver sued the circuit for a couple of million if I remember correctly. He was also scarred for life as the visor of the helmet melted onto his face due to the high heat and the time he was exposed to it!
