Help on Oil Choice.
I've been doing regular oil changes on my Wife's BMW 5.35i (V8) using Mobil 1. The book calls for a 0w-X, where X stands for "the relevant figure, eg 30, 40 or 50"?? Providing the temperature stays above -15C then 10W-X is OK) So I guess a 0-40 is fine, and I'm going to ignore the bit about "long-life" oil as I do oil changes every 6K miles. Thing is, Mobil 1 at Halfords is over

Don't skimp on the oil. By a good quality branded oil preferabley synthetic of the correct grade.
BTW - if the engine will take a long life oil why are you not using it? It can often extend the time between changes to double that of a conventional oil. So it can work out cheaper.
does your wife's car have a "sevice meter" if it does and it's set up to run on longlife then I'd use it.

What year is your BMW?
The Mobil 1 is good stuff but you are paying over the odds for the brand name, especially from Halfords, the 0w-40 is also BMW LL01 approved.
A good BMW approved 5w-40 will be fine and there are plenty to choose from, Shell, Fuchs, Motul, Total, Millers and so on.
Cheers
Guy.

It does have a service indicator, yes.
