Illegal number plate crackdown
Motorists using illegal number plates in the Thames Valley region are being targeted by police.
Number plates are most commonly altered by spacing the characters to spell names or words, or are changed to use non-regulation fonts.
Thames Valley Police and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are running a joint operation into the activity, which they say has increased.

Pc Peter Hare said: "Over recent years there has been a growing trend to alter registration marks issued by the DVLA.
"Drivers may see the altering of a number plate as trivial and harmless, but this is illegal and raises vehicle identification concerns.

".....and another thing, its costing us in income because of all the fines we can't automatically collect"
I hope they do the inspections with actual policemen in cars, then they may see all the proper offences being committed and sort them out too.
Rape, burglary, vandalism all on the up...
Lets concetrate on picking on the motorist!!!
Tsk!
I do agree on the blatent changing of plates to make words but the odd shift of a digit is ok IMO at least you can still read it.

Must be hard trying to bring up kids with all these funny fonts and coloured screw caps driving about.
Aside from the obvious "haven't you got anything better do do" stuff, I agree with them. Mis-spaced plates or ones with stupid fonts are a pet hate of mine. If you can't buy a plate that says what you want, don't bother fudging one.

Gyppo's last week chased a mates mum while she was walking her dog at a park. She then got in her car and they put a brick through the front window. Police not interested.
There have been about 4 cases of people being dragged out their cars and beaten up by a gang (no theft, just shits and giggles). Police not interested.
I had a conservatory door crowbar'ed off it's hinge (it was re-enforced and dead bolted), took them 4 days to come over and have a look.

Apart from minor altering of spacing that goes on with say, S2000's, it is more often the itallic and really small plates that *usually* get looked at - and oddly, it does often go with other offences.
Almost always a starter for ten is no seat belt, an attitude from the word go and normally unregistered (but bought two days ago, honest
) That, no insurance and many defects are the norm.
Where I am it is not the nicer cars that have dodgy plates - aside from minor infringements where the letters / numbers are still standard size, etc but perhaps not quite in the right place
Not generally my cup of tea but the really small p*ss taking ones do get attention, especially when on a heap !

I think some of them look a bit chav but I like mine
I have these two
S1 XLD - (SIX LD) & LD 666
I wanted S1 RLD - (SIR LD) but some one out bid me
Been pulled over twice but they just said get them a bit more closer to MOT requirements which I thought was fair so I moved it 3mm closer to the legal spacing. Not been pulled over since.
I think the point to which myself and Bibbs are trying to make is all we hear about is that the UK is under Policed and struggling to cope with crime in certain areas, then when you hear that they are going to invest shed loads of time and effort on the motorist it just pee`s us off.

Blatantly changing the characters is ridiculous though, I saw one yesterday (on a builders van of all things) that was so blatantly fudged it just makes you wonder why they bother.
