Default Importing a car from the States...

My mate has asked me today to find out about bringing a car back to the UK and whats required. He's just purchased a Shelby GT500 Mustang and will be using the car until the end of the year when he is due to come back to the UK for good after 3 yrs working in Houston. He's just swapped his girlfriends 4.6 GT for the Shelby version with the idea that he will run it for a bit when he gets back and then look at selling it on.

He's checked shipping which will cost about $3000. I thought he will need to do the following:

1. Pay some sort of tax when he brings it back?
2. Get an SVA done but i dont know how much that costs?
3. Get the car registered over here with DVLA.

Does anyone know anything else or any costs of doing the above? He also asked what i thought about servicing and whether main Ford dealers would be able to do it. Its got the 5.4 supercharged V8 thats in the Ford GT but its only got 500bhp in the Mustang! Not bad for

He won't pay any duty or VAT if he is moving back to the UK and he owns the car for a good 6 months before his departure from the US.

Be aware that to make the Mustang pass the SVA needs a bit of work.
There was an episode on Top Gear about this where Hammond was talking about the Mustang ( maybe search Youtube or watch Dave channel on Sky )

eg. Fog lights, changing bulbs in the reverse lights to work as indicators, adding reverse lights, adding side repeater indicators etc

Retune engine for Blighty fuel also...

You need someone with experience to do this right. And you need a few
