Put it another way... if you had paid up front, would you have expected them to refund you?
If I didn't know how the insurance policies work then yes I would.

And you do get a proportion of your premium back if you cancel midterm without a claim.

That's what's irking.

To be honest, I'm tempted to cancel it and then not pay the cash while I bugger off abroad

You're right Badge - clawback of premium.

When I moved to France one of the colleagues I went with had a few grand's worth of debts in the UK. He phoned them up and said he was leaving the country and would they write off his debt in return for half the outstanding amount? They agreed because if they had passed it on to a collection agency they would have got less than that. Genius

When I cancelled mine 4 months in they worked out a % of the remaining that I would get refunded. Wasnt the whole amount though..... I cant remember how / why but it wasnt a huge loss. That was with AF but without claims.

Nick-the calculation will be in the policy docs.

Generally there is an allowance for admin costs.

Badge-Potfish's example seems a good way to deal with it.

What happens if I sell my car and dont get another for several months?

Is it possible to "freeze" your insurance, until you get the new motor?
