All audi's can have variable service intervals depending on the type of driving you do. I get 15k miles between services on mine which average around £300 a time

Just as an example my local dealer had this one in yesterday.

From what I've read the 3's don't offer much room inside.
I frequently drive a company pool 3 Series and it has a very snug interior, too snug it almost feels mean.

I prefer the alternative Ford Mondeo old shape for space, and as I'm not trying to impress anybody the badges are of no concern.

How long are you planning to keep it for?

Why are you not worried about depreciation?

Why < 1 yr old/new?

I've asked these because I'm struggling to understand your guidelines as they stand.
I'd say about 3 years, maybe longer.

I'm more interested in getting something I want than something someone else wants for the sake of a saving on depreciation but there are limits.

The reason I want something newish is that I want something fresh with low mileage as I'm wary of older cars of this type as there's lots to go wrong. Maybe I'm just being paranoid?

Going older might save a few quid on the initial outlay and some depreciation I suppose, I'm open to suggestions

I think you're crackers buying such a German new car.

They are not cheap to run. It's pretty much a closed shop i.r.o electrics for example.

I actually like the new 5 series in estate form through and I think these can be picked up at reasonable cost for 3-5 y.o examples.

I'm starting to think I'd be crackers to buy anything right now.

I think I'm being attracted to shiny things that I definitely don't need and probably don't want *that* much.

I've got a feeling that I'll end up with a something beemer shaped at some point but I'm going to take my time on this one.

No rush at all

1. You would be.

2. That's probably influenced by a recent rush of German bauble-purchasing around these parts, as opposed to anything you really need.

3. Default choice due to want of any real alternative, but that's not your fault. There's talk of a new SVX, etc. So the Japanese might eventually again make some interesting alternatives one day.

4. There's always a rush; it's created buy enjoying a genuinely entertaining drive, not by stodging along in a perceived status symbol.
