I'm all for it. Left lane only, same on dual carriageways, let them use two lanes when there are four and make exceptions for getting past slow moving loads.

Why can we ban lorries from overtaking on the congested parts (as per the Times article) AND re-educate people. Test every body every 5 years that would sort out the bad habits.

I do 35k miles a year and I see all the above every day, there is just not enough consideration or concentration going on! (rant over!)

I've been saying for years that lorries should be BANNED from the 'highways' during rush hour.
This is probably the best way to go, but I think it should be enforced heavily and only during the peek driving times. Maybe 07:00-10:00 and 15:00-19:00. Then it would be easier to swallow.
I used to drive at all times on the M62, and one of the most annoying things was that I always saw MORE trucks on the road during those times. Why can't they use the road at night? Maybe because the building won't accept deliveries at night? Well make them.

The other alternative is to have 4 lanes everywhere. But that would have an obvious cost impact.

I think it would be easier and safer if lorries were only allowed onto the motorways between the hours of 9pm and 6am. This allows them to overtake in two lanes and frees up more space during the day. However the next step would have to be driver education to make people stay in the left lane.

My idea, you can develop it if you like and give me 50% of the profits , is that every lorry has to have a speed limiter which can sense the presence of other lorries. When a lorry wants to overtake another lorry, the system checks that there is another lorry nearby and allows the driver another 10mph for a few minutes. After this it is reset. If someone else nearby has activated their speed delimiter, i.e this lorry is being overtaken, they cannot activate theirs for a longer period. This would stop leapfrogging.

That said, stick all the frieght on trains and we wouldn't have this problem, just a lot of fat hairy unemployed people.

A ban sounds good, but I wonder if HGV's nose to tail in lane 1 will cause difficulties getting on & off slip roads.

Additionally, there should be penalties for any car driver going so slow on the motorway that they cause HGV's to overtake them, grrr, that really annoys me.

Apparently, if the amount of freight on railways were doubled, this would only reduce the amount of lorries on the road by 1%.
