Are you getting some winter tyres for the beemer?

It'll be as much use as the S would have been if you don't!

I don't understand why you would want to make your new car go slower? put the badges back on!

Everyone knows M badges are worth at least 100bhp... especialy on diesel beemers.

Not sure about winter tyres, its more the point that I dont care if I crash this or someone skids into it in the ice. Plus lack of salt and grit rusting the S. Plus the S needed a big service, tyres, and some other work. Plus its nice to drive to work on a sofa

Few things really. but yeah, may well try and get some snow shoes for it depending how bad it gets.

What is it - 525d SE?

Great cars E39's, I adored my 530d Sport. Used to love the Webasto unit heating up the interior on those colder winter mornings, a great little addition to the diesel range. 39mpg isn't that bad for a 193bhp fatty. It was useless in the snow - as I found out in 2010 when we have that epic dollop land on us in the NWest.

523 petrol, SE

So far I'm impressed with it, for £700 cant complain thats for sure. Big contrast between the S which I found quite stressful in traffic whereas this is a lot more relaxing. Real nice. if it lasts till spring without anything major going wrong I'll be happy

Bonus is, you'll have lost nothing on it. £700 is bottom book for these and they feel like they are worth much, much more. Thrust arm bearings are the only major complaint (steering wheel wobble at 60mph + gives it away) and they eat through shocks & springs. Good beater for the winter, they waft delightfully for such small change

I had the same engine in a 323 (E46) which I ran for commuting for 2 years... I scrapped it for the S following 60k miles with no issues bar front wishbones. Engine was as strong on 200k as when I bought it for buttons on 140k.

If the bosy holds together, then it'll serve you very well... it's just a question of which Spring you are aiming for...

Absolutely - I'm already now considering keeping it as a permanent second car. Really lovely place to be and suits my commute so much better as I've got totally fed up of sitting in the S when on boring roads in traffic. It's just no fun when used like that!

Right tool for the job is key.
