M42 Speed Camera's
Two people have sent me the following message in emails and I'm inclined to think its an April fool joke. In case its not though, I thought I would ask on here for opinions (the 2 mph tolerance is really concerning if this is true).
"As of the 1st April 2006 the new digital automated tracking system between
junctions 3 & 7b on the M42 is scheduled to go live.
There are 276 Digital Cameras which have been set to 2MPH tolerance
You will not see any flash. The 1st you will know when you have been caught

I work in Birmingham and travel on the M42 luckily not that stretch though but I have heard about it, they have been doing a lot of work there over the last 12 months or so, and rumour has it it's going live, I thought it was put in place to control traffic as on the M25 for instance (variable speed limits)? Not sure about the technology you mention though.
My other half sent me the same email this morning. Just a reminder I think, as I've just been caught on camera in Bristol.
I'm going to Mallory Circuit tomorrow so will be going along the M42. I don't think I'l be going over 70mph anyway as I'll be in in my Dolly Sprint with another set of wheels in the boot and my toolbox jack etc. in the back where the seat used to be.

I can comfirm there are camera's on the M42 stretch to wards the NEC coming off the M40. If you look up you will see them. or look on the other side of the road when passing those big signs you will se them
. Not sure if they are working though but i have seen flashes before

I reckon that's a camera about every 115 yards or so...
According to that email exceed the variable speed limit by more than 2 mph for more than 460 yards and you'd receive a 6 month ban for totting up - sounds a little on the excessive side don't you think...
I think the ACPO guidelines say that they should still be giving you limit + 10% + 2mph
Look at the date the email says it was going to go live and I think you've got your answer...

Well, they've got 3 cameras per carriageway at each gantry, and the gantries seem to be 2 or 3 per mile. So it sounds about right.
Plus they're definitely digital. And they've been complete since late last year, although quite a few gantries are still empty.
I noted the date, but I think this is either genuine or close to the truth.
The 2mph thing bothers me...but ACPO guidelines are just that - guidelines, not law. Don't get complacent - Becs' boss got done for 75 on the Cumbrian M6!!!
