Default Mandatory Insurance

Read this in autocar this week, the government are bringing in a law to make it illegal to own a car that does not have an insurance policy applied to it.

Anyone heard anything else on this ?

My sister lives in a part buy / part let and on the estate (privately owned) there is a convenant which specifies all vehicles must be insured, regardless of SORN / tax status. Apparently this is to do with some proposed law change. Actually I have always had insurance for theft on a car when SORN applied as although it is not on the road it can still potentially be stolen.

yup this is going to cause issues - what about all the old ' sorn ' worn out cars in barns, sheds, up on bricks.... those things that ' im going to get around too ' kit cars - dona cars... id say if its got an MOT it should be insured - why insure something thats being broken down in bits or awaiting repair ??

Robbing b'stards!

My S is currently uninsured, declared Sorn, ECU Removed, battery uncliped, and locked in my garage.

Lets face it - i'd obviously be paying at least a couple of hundred quid to get an insurance policy on it.

Seriously now - who thinks up these silly schemes?

The gov't soaks up a lot of totally useless prats, who would otherwise be on benefit.

That would be the cheaper and more economically efficient option, but that's socialism for you!

Probably something to do with public liability and 3rd party (someone nicks your SORN car and kills someone)?

Read about this in Fleet News.

I wonder if it's going to be extended to Machinery. I SORN a lot of our dumpers / mini diggers as they don't go on the road.

I'd have liked to see someone try and nick mine when it was off the road......... it was without wheels, brakes, springs, dampers and a battery.

Oh and the drive is on a slope!

Hold on this is stupid ! So I have to buy insurance for my Caterham which is not road legal, and the only time it's off the trailer is for engine work, or at a race track !!!!!!!

(although it does actually have transit & storage insurance, but why should I *have* to !!!!!)
