Mazda MX-5
I saw a guy today in a brand new one drift it perfectly around a roundabout. He and his passenger laughed their way around several bends sideways. Its good to watch someone with a bit of skill.
In the circumstances (greasy road), it was the perfect car for the job

I have driven one of the new ones.
A guy at work had one on a weeks test drive. He took me for a drive and I got bored to convinced him to let me have a go.
One moment later the TC was turned off and he was pissing himself laughing.
Great fun in the corners and it was easy to get the back out.
No grunt though...and basically a girls car.

I can't speak for the MkIII, but the Mk I and II had more driver feedback than almost any other modern car barring Elises and Caterfields. That's what made them fun.
The only 'girly' thing about them was/is the styling, but for someone who can see past that, they're about the most fun you can have at legal speeds. Far more fun on a country lane than an S2000 I'm sorry to say as the feeling and feedback from them is so much more apparent, and the chassis so much more exploitable.
I've often said, an MX5 on 4 spacesaver tyres would be an absolute riot on track.

There's no denying that it is a fun car to drive, most people will agree.
There was a competition in Auto Express a couple of years back in which you could win the best all-round performing car in a feature they did in this particular issue.
If I remember rightly there was allsorts of supercars in there; Murcielago was one I believe, possibly an F430. Can't remember the full line-up.
Anyway, the point is, the MX-5 won it.
Did it win on it's merits though, or because it was actually the cheapest car in the whole line-up of cars tested?
Nah, they wouldn't do that to us just to save a few quid surely?

It's like the only thing wrong with Mandela is that he is a terrorist

What is really scary is that there is a mariner blue MK1 in this month's "Motor Klassik", just like my first.
And its Elan/Daytona spyder pastiche styling is still the best of the lot.
Yes, it was over-braked on the front wheels, as bad as the X-1/9s.
But they are such fun to throw around.
"Despite its flyblown ugliness, the MX-5 is a real cutie" - LJKS, 1990.
If he could only see the lastest version!
Mazda got the rear arches wrong on the first, because they truncated the wheelbase & couldn't resolve the rear bumper lines. Hence the add-on spats.
To be fair to the MK3, it's one of the few modern cars that I could endure owning.
