Default Mini One vs. Mini Cooper

Anyone owned both for a comparison ?

Petrol versions only

I know the Cooper has about 25 BHP more but is it really that noticable and is a Cooper really worth a couple of grand more than a One ?

I'm aware of the standard trim differences and various options packs applicable to each model

My mum is after one and I can't talk her out of it

Any comments/ advice is appreciated

Post 2004 facelift the one to buy with the Getrag gearbox.

A simple ecu remap via diagnostic socket will make the One
the same as the Cooper. Loads of info out there.

Thats all im saying

It will be a later car

Either a pre-reg One with pepper pack or a year old Cooper with chilli pack

both are around £13k

I suspect you know more than you are willing to tell

I had one of the first generation one's with the stage two superchip took it to about 130 bhp which made it a lot more lively, in my opinion I would say get a pre facelift one and chip it

if your mum is a typical mum driver, then the Cooper will be pointless

I drive 'briskly' and can hoestly say that the One has perfectly adequate performance

if it lacks it anywhere, it would be on very long inclines, but that's about the gearing more than the power - you just need to drop out of sixth, not drop two or three gears or anything silly like that

the car (a May 2010 car) has the six speed manual and sixth is very tall to give the best economy

it's very nippy around town and will cruise happily at well above the legal limit

I've never felt it to be underpowered in any situation - which is saying something given what preceded the car and what else I drive

you are clued up on options, so should be aware that you can easily spec the One to more than the price of a base Cooper, a Cooper to more than the price of a base S, etc

however, you can spend a few hundred on individual extras that are well worthwhile - I chose seat heating (a bargain £215), heated washers and mirrors (under £100)

the base spec radio/CD etc are all perfectly adequate

a/c is standard, as are electric windows, mirrors, c/l, etc

the ONLY thing I don't like about the car and I regret not speccing was the steering wheel - the oem thing is nasty and a simple leather wheel would be much nicer

however, it's a slippery slope

hth and feel free to ask if you want more detail

ps free car tax year one and it seems to average mid 40's mpg

TLC pack is a must have at £200 (all servicing for first five years or 50,000 miles and servicing is typically at around 20,000 miles)

pps the First is underpowered and under-specced and makes no sense

my car has the new BMW 1.6 engine - it's much better than the very early 1.6 or later 1.4 engines

£13K sounds good/unlikely for a pre reg with chili pack

thanks gad

pretty much my thoughts on the One compared to the Cooper

she won't notice the difference (she bimbles about)

pre-reg 60 plate One with pepper pack and 16" wheels (pre facelift, they've just revised the bumpers and interior slightly) is advertised at Halliwell Jones Mini, Warrington for £13.5k and I like to haggle

that's a fair price - assuming it comes with tlc

I think you might get £250-£400 off - good luck with getting more

your biggest problem might be buying it before someone else does

HJ's have got a few

4 branches in the North West/ Wales

TLC included

dealers seem quite keen at the moment

just need to talk her out of the 09 plate Cooper she's seen at £13k

minimal miles, all the toys inc dog basket and cat flap, etc

not that she'll ever use them or remember what the buttons are for
