Default Modern Brake Pads

My elderly mother took delivery of a new Toyota Auris 6 weeks ago. It's used exclusively as a petrol powered shopping trolley, and to this extent, she's delighted with it.

However, since day one, the brakes have squeaked tremendously and there's loads of brake dust on the front wheels. This seems strange since she last exceeded 30mph in 1967.

She mentioned the brakes to the dealer today when she was in collecting floor mats (that's its only taken them 6 weeks to obtain) and the salesman gave her some flannel about modern pads no longer containing asbestos and that is was normal for them to shed all this dust. (He conceded the squeaking wasn't normal and they've offered to look at them).

Do modern brake pads not contain asbestos? Should they create a lot of dust? Is my suggestion that she lets me take it out, brake hard from 70mph+ to "bed in the pads" a bad idea?

Modern brake pads haven't contained asbestos for years.

If the brakes are squealling and shedding excess dust, sounds like something is wrong. Get them checked.

The lack of asbestos does make them squeak more then the older style pads. However this shouldnt been excessive and usually just happens slightly from say 5-0mph (last few moments before stopping) or just rolling on the brakes slightly.

Some cars do seam worse then others, I have had toyota's with this problem in the past and also an Alfa when fitted with cheaper non OEM pads.

Get them check, but if Toyota say they are fine, they probably are. If the car is covered under warranty just make a bit of a fuss and they will eventually change the disks and pads to try and keep you happy. I found Toyota Warranty really really good at things like this.

That's exactly when it happens, ie. only when she's slowing down to park up.

Annoying though it may be, can I therefore assume there's unlikely to be a serious problem?

Go out for a drive with her - just to check how much she rides the brakes. Also ask some other owners.

Your idea about bedding in is sound. I recall some years ago BMW saying that under use (read- light, low speed application only) of the brakes can be a problem.
