Default Multi Car Insurance

Hey Guys,

For a while now I have had a few cars at once. With changing them quite regularly insurance has always been a massive pain in the arse.

At the moment I have three cars, one I use for work, one which is fast becoming a track build, and my S2000 for the rest of the time. For the past year, I have had trade insurance allowing me to drive any of my cars fully comp and also keep them covered when not in use. I took this out with Tradewise through a broker called the Insurance Factory. My renewal has now come through and I've rung around to get a few more quotes, as you do. But, on doing this it seems that my broker neglected to tell me that in the event of a claim, I might not be covered as the insurer will ask for proof of trading (receipts, books, invoices etc) to prove that I am a trader. This really pissed me off as NOTHING was mentioned to this effect when I took the policy out! They also failed to mention that after they used my private NCB on the trade policy last year, private insurers wouldn't reuse it, so effectively I've gone and lost 6 years NCB!

Anyway, my question is, do any of you with many cars have a work around here? Can I get something that covers me to drive each of the cars taking into effect I cant drive more than one at once?!?!

Any help would be brilliant guys. Ive looked at the Admiral multicar etc and its silly money.

Insurance makes me SO angry. Its almost like they try to trip you up

I have 3 cars too. For the past couple of years when renewals come round I've checked out the more obvious multi car policies and have always found something gets in the way: either too expensive, or in one case, Admiral, that one of my cars was not on their database so they would not cover it. I have therefore remained for some years with Direct Line, who give a % discount for a second/third car. It's still a lot of money, but it's proper reliable cover and has always worked out cheaper for me than some of the multi car policies which would cover all three of my cars. I know you can only drive one car at a time, but they have to factor in that while you aren't driving the other 2, someone might be nicking them or damaging them!

oh please

you took out a TRADE policy and you don't trade cars

so you deceived the insurance company not the other way round

insurance is expensive, some would say too expensive and poor value but the fact is that it's not a right

you aren't at any risk of being tripped up if you are honest in your answers on the proposal form and inform the insurer about any material facts

I have 3 cars and although each year I look for multi-car policies I have still found that 3 separates are much cheaper and by some margin.

I have never really understood insurance prices. They all use the same data (don't they?) to determine risk but seem to favour (or not) certain types of driver and car.

I do think that we should all remember that insurance is there to cover the expense of both our claims and others claiming against us that we we couldn't or wouldn't like to pay and not just a legal requirement. It isn't a tax to where loopholes can be used to bring down costs. The problem here is that Insurance companies are complete rip offs and so we all feel that we should do all we can to get round paying their asking policy prices. Insurance companies can con us out of money but we can't return the favour. The trouble is that when somebody sues that ass of off you for damage to their property the insurance company will stick 2 fingers in the air.

do a search for all 3 separately, it will be cheaper I am sure.

How are you "deploying" your NCB to achieve that Phil?

I am using the whole NCB on the S. The other 2 cars have built up some (limited amount) on their own though. My age helps with these but then having my 22 old daughter added doesn't and now that she is back home full-time and has pretty much become the main driver of the Peugeot so this will have to be addressed on renewal.

Gaddaffi, did you actually read the post I just put up?!?!?!

I asked the woman from the broker if I needed to be full time trading for this policy. She informed me that I did NOT need to be. It is only in the policy documentation that it stated this! I deceived nobody! If I was happy about that, I would have just carried on with the policy after finding that out, wouldn't I?!?!

I was honest with all my answers and informed the broker of everything I did. Please take the time to READ things before insulting my intelligence and calling me a liar!

I have now sorted insurance out with Aviva on a multi-car policy. I am using my 5 years NCB on my S2000, my year on my MX5 and then they very kindly gave me a discount equivalent to 5 years NCB for the Golf So far, very happy with the call centre staff and the way I have been treated by them!

After all this, I would defo say to give them a ring rather than use the internet. Its amazing how much they can take off if you ask for it!

Thanks for your help guys and I would agree with you Phil about your assessment of the insurance industry!

I had 2 cars on multicar with Admiral
When I got the new one that wasn't on their database
So they put it on and called me back
Saved me £700
Just don't expect too much from the Indian call center out of UK office hours
Or their automated letter templates

I would assume that you were part time trading if you asked me that and were enquiring about a trade policy.

I insure the BMW 318i, S2000 and Accord Type R with no claims protection and legal cover for £989 this year with Admiral. In fact that reminds me, I need to ring today to renew. Haven't even shopped round as the price is so good
