not necessarily dead

rinse it off with warm water, make sure the terminals are greased, and see if it reappears

Cheers Gad, already wiped it off so I will keep an eye on it.

It does sound slow to turn over and feels like its low, but was more concerned about the integrity of the casing.

I haven't put the fluke on it yet, but will do once i've finished fiddling with other bits.

The fuzz is probably caused by the fumes being given off by the battery.

If the battery is fuming to that degree it means there's a dead cell in the battery or its being overcharged.

Or over heating, check the cell water levels, you may just need a topup.
