Foundations anywhere need to be a minimum of 1 minimum, its not negotiable .
If you are next to a substantial tree , expect 2 - 3 metres , but then you would put a garage on a raft .

Building regs are controlled nationally , there arent regional variations in England although i quite often hear people talk about it , its just that inspectors in some areas may have oddities they like to be tough on and impose personal standards.

I had a run in with one this week who was asking for a door to the kitchen before he would sign the job off .
I had a meet with him on behalf of the builder , he said he had been asking for this for 30 years , he didnt take kindly to being told that he had wasted a lot of peoples money then ,as he wasnt entitled to.

If you get any problems on site , remember , the building inspector is normally your best friend , know how you want to get over a problem yourself , but ask his advice first .
