100 miles would see me able to commute all week and have a bit left in case I needed to pop out.

I could then charge up on a Friday evening, ready for the weekend, and then again on a Sunday evening ready for the week.

Re employers putting up free electric points - there are two parking bays outside the front of our head office with electric car charging posts. So yes, they may well. I suspect they'd stop the moment everyone started doing it, mind.

Of course, it would be no good if I wanted to go back to my parents at the weekend - they're 120 miles away.

Likewise, it would be no good if I wanted to visit a supplier.

So I'd end up having two cars. Which is probably less "green" overall than having one car that burns petrol.

100 miles or so range will be more than adequate.
Thats the thing, you wont get 100 mile or so, to get "upto 100 miles" you have to do driving like miss daisy, not use the lights, stereo, heater, heated rear screen, air con, radio/cd ect and be very light on the brakes.

And then you have to factor in the "where is the next place i can charge"

If say you have 10 miles range left to get home but the distance you have to do is 15 then you have to get the car charged before you can do that, and where is the nearest charge point.

And like all batteries if you just keep doing "top up" charges you diminish the battery life a lot quicker.

As i said they are a short term stop gap.

These cars will rarely be taken more than 10 or 15 miles from home, so it's not really a problem.
