Default Oil Age

Noticed at work the other day that a lot of cans of motor oil have a "produced on" date marked on them, so does this mean it should only be stored for a certain time before it deteriorates? I have a quantity of oil(10 litres) in the garage marked March 08, should I find a use for this soon.?
I used 5L last weekend for a service, i take it that it would be ok.

when i bought my gearbox and differential oil, i was advised to use them within 2 years. i'm pretty sure if you contact the manufacturere, they'll be able to give you their recommended shelf life.

Unless he's using fully-synth, which will have been put together by chemists within the last couple of years.
