Obviously Jonathan Palmer owns Brands as well and his instructors normally mark you up for a lack of mechanical sympathy I've found

As in a good thing? If so that's a refreshing attitude. Too many of the other type of events treat the cars as precious things. In the context of racing they are built to do that and be used as such. A road car's a different thing.

Yes as in a good thing - they always seem quite happy with commenting on the way I've dealt with their cars.
