Petrol & Diesel Prices
That's because the road tax on a diesel is more expensive than on a petrol car, making it only viable to own a diesel above a certain mileage per year.
I remember when I was still in the Netherlands that the break even point was like 15k a year, above that a diesel is cheaper, below it a petrol is cheaper.
the future is a daily econobox ( made that word up)
with something tasty (or things) for the weekend
it's a great formula:
comfort and economy for Monday to Friday commuting when you might as well be tied to the other cars with a length of string and 'performance' is pointless
mentalism at the weekend when the roads are 50/70% quieter

We have a Bluemotion Golf which is fine, if uninspiring, for most if the journeys that we make. I drove the family to LHR the other day - 96 mile round trip, averaged just over 80mpg. On sussex lanes, it typically does about 70 mpg and we get over 700 miles from a £70 tank of the expensive stuff.
Whilst the NSX continues to impress and amuse at weekend.
my golf gtd does late 40s on my commute, overtaking occasionally and generally pressing on. round town i see late 30s i think.
the S does half that, same journey
i can get 60mpg if i drive like miss daisy in the golf but cba
my bike will do 50+ pressing on. in the summer

diesel is still much cheaper than petrol in the rest of europe

My mates new BMW 520d F10 is no VED for first year, and £30 a year after that.
You are incorrect, VED is cheaper on DIESELS.

I am not incorrect, you didn't read it properly

I replied to san2000 saying how diesel is cheaper in the rest of europe.
So to sum it up, in the UK diesel tax is cheaper and the fuel is more expensive, in the rest of europe it's the other way around.

Ianlong time no see
you around for a pint some time
ages since I've seen you?
anyone seen Kelvin?
I thought the same the other day - we have 8-9p/l difference around here.
I wonder what the real cost difference is between the 2 fuels.
imo petrol maintenance tends to be cheaper in the long run - slightly lighter engine so less tyre wear, smaller brakes (diesels are still bigger?), and the turbos on diesel tend to need replacement at 120k area.
WGAF - we have petrols and i'm enjoying it
