Peugeot diesel engines
In mid-90s cars I know that Peugeot diesels (which AFAIK have a reasonable reputation for reliability subject to cambelt changes but with some HGF problems) were fitted to other makes, such as Ford.
My question is does anybody know if Renault used them as well?
(I'm thinking of looking at a '96 diesel Clio as a beater because I think it will have a Peugeot engine and which may be better than a Renault built one - I'd really like to buy a diesel 306 but they all sell before I can get on the phone!)

The answer to your question is, just about everything on earth from Tatas to Hondas.
It gets a bit confusing with the Sevel vans/MPVs though; some use FIAT and some use Peugeot units. IIRC, some even use the old Citroen Diesel too.
AFAIK, Renault use their own Diesels exclusively.

Used on older vauxhalls - the corsa for example.
Not sure about Renault - but if the rest of their build quality is anything to go by you'd be better getting it in any other car - run away from Renaults! (esp old ones I've never known cars have more expensive parts)

Not only the cost; they, like FIAT, seem to use random parts to make them, so the spare you get doesn't actually fit your car.
I just cannot understand what people see in them; they drive OK, but there are too many negatives.

My neighbours have a diesel 306 and it really does sound like there's a lorry outside. You'd have to really want to save money to have one of those.
if you can find the right 306 that has, all the electric windows, alarm, immobilizer working then has a sun roof that doesnt leak finally check to see if the heater works!
The heater matrix fails "often" in 306 and it took me all weekend to do finish - its a full 4 spanners in the haynes manual! - the part is only

Renault diesel engines are made by Renault.
I have a 205 pug diesel I bought as a beater 3 months ago, I have only ever filled it up twice and in that time I have been to brighton and the cotswolds and drive it everyday to work. It passed its mot last week with no problems, I had a service that cost me 60 quid and it cost 350 quid to buy. It does 71 mpg at a steady 56 and over 50 mpg upban from its 1.8 litre diesel engine. Not bad for a beater
My mate has same engine in his beater but he has 306, he drove to prague on one tank of diesel (over 700 miles) from Bournemouth.
