Default Polo GTI

Thinking of replacing the BMW with a Polo GTI in a few months time - it got a good write up in the Telegraph the other day, and it's infinitely more practical than the BMW (the rear seats don't fold in mine).

The 1.8t (150bhp) is tried and tested, and easily remappable to 190-odd bhp, and you can spec it up quite well to make it quite luxurious for a little car.

Anybody got any opinions (good or bad) on the car?

I rate the vehicle - but as you probably saw yesterday, my, from new Passat (2 yo now) has had more of its fair share or recall and warranty work. Never broken down but has had all manner of things swapped on it.

No opinion on the GTI but a good friend had a middle of the range Polo and it also had loads of warranty work done on it. All free but it seemed to be ongoing for all of the time she had the car.

That said, the GTI is a good looker!

VW have a terrible rep these days for reliability, a mate in canada (where cars have a hard life -40C to 40C) says their sales are rock bottom now.

i guess if you only keep it while under warranty and it's none breakdown a la carpers it's not too big an issue but it's bound to hit residuals medium term.

I'd be worried that polo chassis can't handle that kind of power. The older style pDi polo had too much power, torque steer and I swear and I could feel the chassis twist. It was a laugh as a loaner but wouldn't want to own it. But it was the previous generation.

Well it goes without saying that we'd arrange a test drive... - I'll mark that down as things to check then

I advise nailing the arse out of it when you do. Its wierd watching the sales reps - they must hate it.
