Default Private Plates

S2000 was an X reg with a S20 XXX plate which I want to swap to my V reg runaround (as the S is about to be written off)

If I go to the DVLA with my S20 reg V5, tax, mot, insurance plus the V reg papers they should be able to switch them over and assign another X reg plate to the S2000 yes?

So when am I able to put the S20 plate on the V reg? as if it's an instant swap and I get pulled 5 mins later, I'll be driving a car with mismatched plates and licence info.

Or is there a delay on the switchover?

Thanks

I don't think they will do it over the counter any more. I phoned them when I wanted to take a private plate off my 04 last summer and they said it could only be done by post.

They allocated a date-specific plate to the car, sent me the retention certificate for the private plate, the new V5C with the new reg on and the revised tax disc within 10 days of me posting the papers to them.

You can always just put the plate onto retention rather than sticking it onto your other car? Might make life a bit easier and cheaper if you want to sell it or move it to another S2000 in the future....

You also have to get a letter from your insurer saying they have no interest in owning the plate before the DVLA will release it to you (even if you bought the plate).

Iirc, your insurer now own the car and the plate on it.

The claim has not been finalised yet, hence me getting in there first. The plate's mine, mine I tell you.

Dependant on the local DVLA office it will take, give or take, 10 working days... phone them and ask them what they define as a working day though.

It took almost a month for them to transfer my plate from my S2000 to the Jag and issue a new V5 for both...

The service is now really poor imho

The insurer will play ball so you should have no need to worry about that. LL is right - the changeover is not instantaneous. You can either apply by post or by dropping the papers roun to your local DVLA office. The advantage of the latter is that they check you have the right papers on the spot. They will the phone you o let you know when you can collect the new papers and swap the number over.

As someone said, it is dependent on DVLA office.

My wife found it very easy recently to get her plate put on her new car, just a trip to the office.

I have got to put my plate on retention in a couple of months, and my car has never had an 06 plate... should be interesting, not looking forward to either the cost or hassle!

Andy, that's what I had to do, as the 04 had been registered at new with the S200D ** plate. It wasn't any hassle - cost was, I think,

DVLA turned around issuing the new 53 reg within 10 days.

It took a bit longer when I sold the reg and had to apply to transfer the retention certificate to the buyer, so it may be a bit hit and miss and just depend on how busy they are when you apply.
