I think there is a very good argument to say that the MX5 is the perfect car for the enthusiast.

I had one of those MX5Parts systems, £100 off their EBay store. Sounded fantastic combined with an MP62 Eaton

I have managed to get an insurance quote for £213 a year so I am seriously tempted on getting a 1.6 to nob about in.

For less than £1k a whole years motoring?

Something about those early Mk1 .... i'm almost tempted to bin the FIAT off and get a cheap shitty one for banging around in to work and back.

Knowing you, you would have as much fun in it as I am in mine.....OUCH..OK, hers.

Drove home from work late tonight, top down in the dark and it was dry. Jeez they should make these available on the NHS for anyone suffering from depression. I defy anyone to drive anywhere in one of these and not be smiling when they get out.

Raspy farty old MG sounding exhaust burbling away. Not loud, just characterful, musical even. MX5Parts system, brand new, £200 last summer.

BRAND NEW.

£200.

In a box and everything.

And working on it is such a joy because you can get at everything and everything is either a 10, 12 or 14mm socket or a phillips screw!

Why these have a burds car reputation is beyond me. It's a tinkerers delight.

It also has a really tight turning circle so is easy to park. Aha, that's why burds like them...

Buy one now. Under a grand, a couple of hundred a year to keep it going if you know your spanners and it's the perfect beater AND fun car combined.

Gentlemen, no longer decide which is your fun car or which is your beater/commuter, have them both.
You do realise what you have DONE now don't you !! Everyone wants one !!

Might as well wait for it to explode (it will) & then get an MX5!

I've been saying similar for 13 years.

No... Because most of us want more power (s2k for example) and ignore the ownership route. I'd love one, but it would have to do 45mpg. Old ones would be no where near that. Wondering though just how reliable 1k mazdas are, most of the shed priced examples are garbage on fleabay

Hats off to mx5 owners though, balanced rwd fun without the snappy oversteer.

I drove a mk1 1.6 many years ago and the lack of grunt put me off if I'm honest

But it handled beautifully, much more compliant than the S2 and stopped well too. Lovely steering also. Felt dark inside, I think due to size

Well, heated seats in and working. A good excuse to clean and the missus crap out of it and give it a good vacuum too.

Seats also lowered about 2" so I can actually see the top of the clocks now.

Next job replacement bonnet hinge which apparently I can do without removing a front wing. Let's see....
