Default Replacement keys

I've just thrown my car keys into the crusher at the tip

They managed to fish them out but they had been damaged beyond repair. Luckily I don't live far away so was I was able to walk home and get the spare set but I'll be needing some new ones.

I've not had to replace car keys before and I imagine there's more to it than just getting some new ones made with all the electrical gubbins these days.

Any idea what the process is and how much I'm going to get fleeced for?

It's a Subaru if that make any difference.

If the immobiliser is built into the key itself, expect something close to £200. At least that's what a dealer wanted for a replacement key for my Alfa. Turns out £90 of that was labour for "reprogramming" the new key. My local independent got me the key for £100 and whilst he shouldn't have been able to reprogramme (as an Indy), he was ex-dealer and so had a mate he could ring for the appropriate code.

tell your insurance company and get them to confirm it's ok

I can tell you from experience that they can get very funny if the car is ever stolen and there is any kind of discrepancy about keys - number, originality, etc

a subsequent owner may be reassured too

I don't think it is on the Legacy.

As Gad says tell your ins. co - they may want the knackered key (well I would if I was them).

Doesn't the ins co. pay for replacement keys under certain circumstances?

Thanks chaps, insurance implications hadn't even crossed my mind!

I've got the knackered key here nice and safe.

With a semi Darwinian style move like that, I have to ask - How?!

Everyone else has been so polite

I was holding two rubbish bags in each hand and somehow managed to keep hold of the keys with one hand, forgot, threw the lot in.

It's not my fault, I've got Developmental dyspraxia. I'm definitely not an idiot.

Apparently people like to chuck mobile phones in too.

Well I phone the insurance company this morning, they didn't seem particularly interested but I'll keep the old key somewhere safe along with any paperwork from the new one just in case.

Subaru dealer reckon it'll cost about £150, I really don't want to do that again

£188 for the key, £55 to recode it.

£243.

Ouch.
