One of the cars I currently look after is an Evo 4 RS.
Since the owner bought it, I have installed front Brembos and generally tidied things up.
Unfortunately, the clutch slave cylinder went and the owner then mashed a syncho trying to get it into gear.
So in the next month it is having a rebuilt gearbox (which is something I cannot commit to), fixed bucket seats, new steering rack ends, new track rod ends, and new coilovers.
Performance wise it has a Blitz sonic filter, 3" HKS Exhaust, Bailey piston dump valve and a Mine's ECU. I reckon it's putting out about 305 - 310bhp and since it weighs in at about 1250kg (Being the RS and all) it certainly doesn't hang about.
The only difference in running costs is the fuel. I manage 20mpg, he manages 16, but 14 is more realistic if he's equally playful.
Now whilst i'm sure an S would 'outhandle' the Evo on a track, I just can't see it working the same way on the road. This Evo 4 makes boost from 2000rpm and has no lag that i've managed to notice. It really is a quick car and would have no problem in dispatching an S2000 unless you were completely on it and even then it would probably pull away.

I've had 2 Evo 8s, reasonably tuned. Love them, monster fast and if you know how to drive them, they can be fun. It's very difficult achieving the limits on public roads though. Wet driving is fun. Expensive to keep though, not in the same leage as the S2000 for running costs!
It's pretty much the exact opposite on an S2000.
RWD - AWD
NA - FI
No gizmos - lots of gizmos
2 door - 4 door
Soft top - hard top

I've not owned one myself, but have always loved them and before i got my s2000 i was looking to get one. So i had a nice test drive in an evo9 fq340, it was awesomely quick, and they look soooo cool. But inside felt a little cheap and a little rattly.
In the end i chose my S over the evo, it felt good to drive with the roof down, it's quick enough for the road, more fun to drive (now im used to rear wheel drive) Felt more solid inside.
And lets face it, its a much prettier looking car (without sounding too gay)
But i still want an evo, i just wont get rid of this for one.......yet

When I bought my S2000 the short list included:
S2000
Legacy spec B
Pulsar
Evo Vrs
DC2 'teg with a supercharger
All the turbo stuff was fun but way too fast to have fun legally/with the wife in the car.
The 'teg was amazing, I loved it and my mate still hasn't sold it so I might buy that too but the S2000 just has something I can't put my finger on.
I drove one and it just spoke to me, then I got mine and it immediately tried to kill me, she has a personality already.
I've been away for a while and all I could think of was the pile of parts waiting here for me to fit them.
It's going to be a great summer.

I think a lot of these cars end up in the wrong hands. It's like the GTR, people think the performance comes cheap, realise it's expensive to look after, skimp, then it breaks. There are literally loads of shit ones out there which have been badly maintained, meddled with and ragged.. Both mine were 1 owner showroom cars and I had zero problems in over 2 years total ownership.
I'd like a really nice Evo 6 RS or Makinen, but impossible to find. The 8 and 9 are the ones to go for in the newer range, but stick to a UK car with full specialist history and low miles. Avoid the 7.
