Scamera vans
So what is the real deal with these bloody things?
Went past one today and the old detector didn't go off. Do the vans only zap you if the operative thinks you look as if you might be going a bit quick? Or are they constantly on and my detector just doesn't pick up the frequency they operate at?
And why are they always hidden in a bus stop?
What is the website where they post up where the gits are going to be each day?
Here's hoping I don't get 3 points through the post in the next 2 weeks.

Most camera partnerships have their own websites. Just google for your local area.
Up here around Glasgow, it's the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership, and their site lists all their mobile and fixed locations by County.
In the case of my local mobile locations, there are two but it's the same van that does both. Here's a pic of the scamera van at it's Mearns Road (East Renfrewshire) location, which is about a mile from my flat. If it's not at one it's at the other, often until some quite strange (ie. late) hours.

It's a right scabby old thing and there's usually nobody at the wheel. I guess the "operator" sits in the main part of the van reading his Daily Sport, munching on crisps ...

Typically in the interests of safety I see your van parks on the pavement to obstruct it causing pedenstrials to walk in the road. Just like ours do!
Very hard to detect these mobile vans even when they are working. Best bet is GPS warning system. Trouble is this alerts you even when the van is not there.

To be fair to them (can't believe I'm saying this ...
), they park outside an abandoned farm building and that stretch of pavement only exists outside that property. Otherwise, it's a grass verge so there aren't any pedestrians to obstruct as such ...

In Reading they park on a double yellow line, on white chevrons which have a complete white border, obstructing a sign post warning of a bend - hey, buy why let that get in the way of collecting money (oops, I mean 'safety').
Now days most Talivans use laser, so there's a chance you might not pick up the laser beam, as it's very narrow.
Do they use a constant stream of video? The guidelines they apparently work to say that they don't. Having seen TV footage of them in action, I would say absolutely. Also many court cases have been withdrawn from at the last minute when the entire video tape is requested - make of that what you will.
The law (not a guideline) states that a police officer can use technology to corroberate a prior opinion of speeding. So there's 2 things to look at here - is it a civvy in the van, and is he using the equipment to back up his prior judgement of speeding (which must be with the unaided eye as far as I know).

A few comments:- Surely an ilegally parked van is in contravention of the road traffic act ? also a van parked dangerousil and causing an obsrution would also be in contravention of the raod traffic act, it ha salways been my understanding that the police or civilian workers must at all times uphold and observe the law including the road traffic act and therefor could this be a possible line of defence and attack that could maybe get a sppeer of a charge ? . I must admit that`I am anot sure if I altogether with this sort of defense using loop holes but as we see so often celebs and thier fat walets escaping all sorts of charges why not the masses?
On another note i do not always think it is a bad thing to cntrol speed more agressively in certain areas, irecently witness a terrible piece of driving by a chav in a Saxo , on the road from Beaconfield to Slough in a very crowded urdan area i was slopig along at 30mph an adequate spped for the area when I was overtaken by the rocket propelled Saxo at at least 60mph. Funnily the next day a van parked in layby at same spot! my only complaint would be the patheticsign on the pavement approx 200metres behnd van to signify its presence sign approx 300mm square and sitting directly on the pavement, not wt i would call conspicuious but hey ho f he managed to catch the idiot in the Saxo on that day i for one would not protest, while idiots such as this drive we will all suffer and have no real redress against the dreded vans ?
JUST AN OPINION

I always find these websites such depressing reading, but it is handy to know the tricks the law use to generate more money.
