A bit like the VANOS issues on M cars.
My friend had a Jap imported STI (320bhp iirc). A pretty quick car.
He ran it for 2 and a bit years.
He had no issues apart from someone stealing his keys and driving it 200m up the road before the anti theft device he had fitted kicked in (Blackjaxx IIRC).
But he lost almost
AIUI, the engine blowups are mostly either imports (and uk modded ones) that aren't run on high octance fuel and booster. A savvy owner will know this and will have run it like this all it's life and poss ok, however many owners will just shove whatever fuel in and *try* to remember to put SUL instead but don't as it's +
I love them, just couldn't get past the image... shallow I know!
I had an 06 STI for a few days and it was one of the most exciting cars I have ever driven.
Dreamer has got a new one.

Get an S2000, Honda engines are bulletproof!

The Subaru engine is basically bulletproof.
The fact that many Subarus are driven (and more importantly "tuned") by people with a precisely dangerous amount of knowledge, is probably the root cause of the reputation.

I think an Evo has a much better image (within a narrow spectrum)
They drive well and bang per pound is very high (both cars)
However, you do need to take into account the image and theft issues
I maintain cabin fit and finish and quality of material is poor - again subjective and based on what you are accustomed to
I couldn't live with an Impreza as a daily drive because I find them unattractive, and that matters to me
If function is more important to you, then fine

Mine is running fine. Great engine performance which can put a smile on your face as the turbo kicks in. Not a particularly exciting drive otherwise, but then you sometimes are happy to forego excitement for (relative) safety. And perhaps I compare these things to riding the bike these days.
Will keep mine over winter then sell....finances depending. Hope it won't have depreciated too much.

Jonner - people who make statements like that generally don't know what they are on about.
It depends what model you are looking at.
The early scoobs (MY97-00) were guilty of blowing up possibly more than they should, but it certainly wasn't common. On the 97 & 98 model they suffered from piston slap, which could end up with engine failure.
The phase 2 engine on the 99 and 00 model cured that, but due to a less than reliable MAF sensor, there were a lot that ran lean and self destructed. This was a minor issue on Uk models, and Subara indtroduced a better MAF sensor eventaully.
The problem I think lies with people who don't know what they are doing - basically either modifying them to the point they run lean, or by buying a JDM and not running it on SUL fuel - or a combination of the 2.
The 01 onwards engines are very strong, and the latest ones are nigh on bullet proof - if you know what you are doing.
Evo enignes are even stronger in my view - but that's a diffeent topic.
Now had all the people who have advised you some factual information cuch as the above, you could probably listen to them.
