Default Speeding - How Many Points....??

Had a nice letter from Essex Police this morning with a pretty picture of my car on it - fortunately (for me) I wasn't driving but.... 48 in a 30

Any idea how many points etc my mate can expect....? Seem to remember someone getting caught doing similar after SM2?

Cheers, Jules

Depends on the county - they all have variations on the 'interpretation'.

Rule of thumb is :

up to 15mph over speed limit : 3points
up to 20mph over speed limit : 4points
up to 25mph over speed limit : 5points
over 25mph over speed limit : 6 points and short ban
over 30mph - get a good solicitor

Cheers

Almost certainly 3 points + minor fine, all managed by fixed penalty (by post - no need to go to court, etc).

Commiserations to your mate, but it probably would have been worse if it was 50mph.

Yeah, thanks - could be worse I guess.

I feel terrible though - it was the first (and only) time I've let anyone else drive the car!!

Jules, these days its well worth getting some kind of detector - BEL 550 or Road Angel seem to be the most popular.

Do you know if it was a GATSO or plod-with-hairdryer ?

It was a mobile camera - cheeky b*st*rds parked next to a fire station so the yellow and red stripes on the van blended in with the scenery (I did see them at the time mind, but too late.....).

Was thinking about getting a BEL 550..... any pro's and con's for BEL vs Road Angel?

Cool!! (Or not!) My photo is from behind but it's pretty clear who's driving (one of us has long hair and one doesn't ) First picture I've got of my car though - it looks lovely
