Default SVA Question(s)

Hi everyone,

I have an impending SVA on a recent import (no, not an S, sadly).

What I need to know is will bigger wheels be a failure?

i.e. the model report suggests 225/55/ R16
the car currently has 225/45/ R18

SVA regulations have been changed recently, my friend recommended the Westfield website as a good starting point for information

http://www.westfield-world.com/sva.html

The draft 2004 SVA Manual from 2004
http://www.westfield-world.com/sva_manual_draft.pdf

Additional detailed information from VOSA
http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/publicatio...xplanations.htm

And I just found this one, which is the official Goverment page, telling you what they check on the car.

yes! it will fail.
My S was subject to this issue as i had 17"s instead of 16" as per the model report. But if you borrow the right size wheels for the sva then change them after it is fine - basically make sure the wheel size is per the model report otherwise the whole test scope changes!. My garage charged me

No mine didnt come with any alarm! To pass the SVA it needs at minimum an immobilizer which is cat2 - but to be prudent the marginal cost of a thatcham cat 1 is the probably the best route in terms of insurance and peace of mind etc. Any brand cat1 or cat2 is sufficient for SVA purposes.

Cat 1 is alarm and immobilizer - so if you do have it fitted it then this is fine!

Thanks again for the info kitkat.

I have one final Question. Do you NEED headlamp washers for it to pass as UK cars with Xenons have headlamp washers...??

I believe the answer is yes, because the UK (and EU models) model standardised them due to regulations surrounding the HID headlamp system, so that will be in the model report too!

It's not in the model report and if you look at S2000s on Autotrader all the JDMs seem to be without the washers. I doubt very much that they've been changed back again after SVA.
The washers on HID headlamps, as I understand it, are a manufactured requirement. Not a requirement for MOT.

I will call VOSA sometime this week to get the official word on this but I wanted to see if anyone has first hand experience?

Edit: Unfortunately you do need Washers for HID's. Have just called VOSA to check.

How do you go about fitting normal Halogen bulbs?

Kitkat, I've also enquired about the tyre/ wheel sizes. It seems the size of wheel isn't the issue, nor is the tyre size itself. It's the rolling radius.
There is an 8% leeway on this from the guidance VOSA provide. In other words if you increase the size of the wheel, you need to decrease the tyre profile in relation.

225/55/ 16 should go to 225/45/ 18.

The chap at VOSA told me to ask the test centre to call him if they think otherwise and he will sort it out.

Afraid not, do a search on SVA preparation.

Or better still save yourself some money
