Default Things I've never understood - No.178

Why, even on more modern cars with side repeaters, does one indicator flash faster when the other bulb has failed ?

There are, of course, many, many other things I don't understand ...

It's because more amber light needs to come out of fewer bulbs, a bit like putting your thumb on the end of a hose pipe

In old days, the lack of resistance in the circuit meant the bi-metallic strip heated up quicker in the flasher unit.

They must use an additional logic gate to have the same effect, now that flasher timers are usually electronic and the 'tick' is produced by a loudspeaker.

Or not, in the case of my Suzuki. The tick is so quiet, I've become one of those dithery old gits who trundles along for ages with an indicator going. I take comfort by imagining I'm making up for all the BMW drivers who opted for the Entertainment Pack in lieu of the Indicator Pack ...

Its a final warning from BMWs that you have been using the indicators and you must stop.
