The M is the same height as S with HT on. Fact of the day.

I bottled fitting side grills as it was cold, going to leave it till its warmer or get Doris hair dryer on it

So today I moved the M3 on.

Slightly sad day as i'd say this is the best fvm / possibly the best car outright i've owned. Stunning car and a technology masterpiece full of gadgets. In my view the GT3 was nowhere near the feel and package this car is. It did munch the fuel, but had a shit load of poke and a lot of practicality too. Great for mile munching (fuel aside) and only attracted attention from those in the know.

But, i'm off abroad in a few months on a rotation, wasn't really using the M3, and it frees up the garage to put the S back in there along with trailer (It was part living at Veysport and had lined up a £150 PM garage down the road) It therefore didn't make sense to keep it an let it depreciate while I was away. I actually didn't do badly on the price either. I lost £3k in 5 months which is rather good with this sort of car. I took a few bits off which i'd added and made my pennies back on them.

If I was back working in the UK, i'd have one of these again in a shot. I liked the Competition pack so would go for that.

So, bye bye M3!

But I have bought a little something to keep me amused

Thanks Gad.

I've always said if you buy the right car, you make it easier to move on. Something I need to stick to with my affliction to cars! This car had an original price of £64k and pretty much every option, plus a transferable 5 year service pack. One trader actually offered me £1k more that I got for it, but had stock to move before they could buy. I thought i'd just bite the bullet.

One thing which I forgot to mention, and i'm sure you will attest to, is how scary the technology has become on cars like this. The battery for example, is coded to the ECU. As are the seats. Wear sensors tell you brake pad depth, the nav system is the best i've seen, etc etc. All very amazing, however what scares me is the prospect of owning an old one of these cars without a warranty. You'd be mad imo!

Definitely! I would have expected a lot more in 5 months.

So what's the new toy?

Fully agree with all that but as you know, moderns (with the exception of a few supercars) hold no attraction for me

I genuinely enjoy a bit of amateur spannering and I'd find it frustrating to be totally reliant on a garage

For that reason it's more likely I'd buy an E36 M3 than one like yours

It might be different if it was a company car but I don't think so - I could lease all sorts of modern stuff through my co but there's just no appeal

Funny how tastes change

So, what have you bought?

My money is on a hatchback...
