Today... i remapped the Golf
Should have got the Cupra Tdi :-D
Turbo back straight exhaust works well on these too as does sorting out the crappy plastic restricted inlet.
You can fit uprated ARB if you haven't already and if it doesn't come with a rear one, fit one
When you fit the dog bone mount, fit it as half powerflex and half OEM - that cuts the vibration down.
Fine to blank the EGR but do NOT remove the ASV although an EGR delete also works well, Allards used to make an EGR delete insert.

I removed the ASV with the EGR delete mate fitted it last week, it does shudder a little when shutting down i just put my clutch in. I've been told a cat back does F all on the fabia and a decat helps the turbo spool quicker but thats it, also heard it needs to be mapped better too.
I was going to buy some Gold 312mm brakes but they guy didnt get back to me they are meant to really help.

In the unlikely event the tubo fails and it stars to run on its own oil - i'd rather keep the ASV in place - never did see the reason for removing it. I did all the boost hoses on mine with SFS ones, when they were removed and the car was sold, it felt asthmatic by comparison.
SFS made some stuff up, allards do a solid steel pipe boost kit ..... for a simple remap, the bigger silicon hoses are fine but when you start adding hybrids there's more boost than the silicon can handle.
The main problem is the crappy intercooler clips and connecting clips, as you add boost, they just leak and / or pop clean off.

My commuting bug (Golf GT TDI PD 130) has grown some pubic hair around its German balls and been given a remap, £45 cost and uploaded directly from my Netbook via Blacksmoke.co.uk. Up to 180hp, 300lbft, and boy that mid range doesn't half surge. Relentless and it's an excellent map IMO (many that have used the map have praised it due to its smoothness), good job i'd shod the fronts with Goodyear F1 Eagle Assymetric 2's to shove that torque onto the tarmac. It is like the map has woken the car up from a zombiefied life, of scuttling down the M6 / M56 not exceeding much more than 50 most mornings. The clutch doesn't know what's hit it!
Work in progress though my little Golf. MK4 Golfs are pretty crap as general cars go (I have to say, except the interesting R32). Comfy, fairly roomy and that infamous notchy gearchange that gets notchier as the car ages. They long to be tuned and they really are a modders dream. I was going to leave the Derv alone and let it dwindle its life away on its measily narrow power band, but you know, its a healthy car at 155,000 miles so what the hell! Its had some hedge action at some point during its ownership, and the last owner started to get a bit careless with its condition.
So far, I've Powerflex'ed the gearbox dogbone mount (yes vibration was bad, but now settled down a bit) for a better gearchange. It was one of the first things I did. Also I swapped all the leaking boost pipes and knackered Intercooler (leaking oil vapour) to new plumbing. I fitted a bigger Side Mount Intercooler, although they get heat soak really I should have re-plumbed one across the radiator. Its all come together nicely though, so the temptation to get this thing handling better (christ that'll be a job) and being able to lean on the rubber better is next on the list. The EGR has been blanked off, sod economy. I hate the way EGR's tar up everywhere..
You know, I told the wife 6 months ago when I bought this Golf that i'd leave it alone. Goddam it! I want to track the thing next year.
Here's hoping that the Turbo / clutch and tranny manages to keep alive.

or do you enjoy doing it?
I do enjoy it, treat it as a meaningless mini project and it'll never be a dragster or "weapon"! It's my commuting car so its fun trying to give it a bit of attitude and make the ownership more of a laugh. Out the box, I want a cheap car to run, plenty of overtaking power when I want it, and cheap to buy. Hence, for the money, nothing compares to a remapped 180 horsepower 55mpg Golf that cost just over a couple of grand. Work in progress to gradually upgrade bits and pieces, I don't mind spending a grand on delivering the result.
Just ordered an R32 dogbone mount today, £82 factory order! Goodbye very soon to the Powerflex vibration. Plenty to do to get this VW sorted. Overall It'll never totally impress on the road, or look that good but who cares!
Not a fan of SEAT design

Unlikely occurance that the engine would run away on you, but as you say... its there for a reason.
Mods so far to this 10 yr old Dub.. (we all it "Chunky" in the family!):
180bhp remap, Audi S3 brakes, Newer bigger Turborevs Intercooler side mount, Silicone boost plumbing, Audi S3 lower intercooler pancake pipe,
Eibach set up previously from last owner (its bladdered though and needs changing!
), Bora Sport Clocks, Allard EGR delete, Team Dynamics 18" Imola Alloys, Goodyear F1 Eagle Assymetric 2's, Alu R32 interior trim.
To come...
R32 front bumper, 4Motion rear valence, Rear axle bush replacement, new driveshafts both sides (pretty tired CV's), fitting R32 Dogbone next week, NewSouth Boost and Oil temp gauges (just for fun!)
