Default Tyres

I've been having a bad run of tyre luck lately.

My Z4 Coupe which I bought just under two years ago came with runflats which I promply got rid of and replaced with regular tyres (Goodyear F1s). The car doesn't come with a spare tyre so I carry tyre-weld for emergencies.

1. Four weeks ago I put two new rears on my car which was fair enough as it needed them. £260 fitted for two Falken FK452s at my preffered tyre place, Jim Dickson's in Cumbernald.

2. Two weeks ago I noticed the passenger side rear tyre had lost some pressure so took it to Tesco garage and put some air in it. The next morning it was down again so took it to local tyre monkeys who checked it and said it was a pinhole in the sidewall - possibly been stabbed/knifed. I used a can of tyre-weld on the tyre to keep me temporarily mobile and ordered a replacement tyre online from Camskill for £114. Got a local place to fit it for £10.

3. Was driving the car last night and came upon a minefield of potholes - avoided all I could but ended up hitting one with my front passenger side and rear passenger side. Immediately felt the car pulling to the left so I pulled over and sure enough the front tyre had gone flat immediately. Pulled over and thought what to do and noticed the rear tyre was also down a little bit. Had to call out the AA who took me to a 24 hour garage to get a replacement front tyre as it had a large gash in the sidewall and couldn't be repaired. Had to leave my car by the side of the road up on an axle stand. Had to buy a brand of tyre I'd never heard of (Kenda Kaisers - which subsequent research show to be pretty poor by all accounts) as it was the only thing they had in the correct size - at a cost of £96.50 (Camskill sell them for £48.90). AA guy put some air in the rear tyre and it seemed to hold it fine.

4. Got up this morning and the rear tyre has again lost some air. Will check it when I go home tonight again but looks like it may be gubbed too. Will take it to local tyre monkeys again for them to check for a (hopefully repairable) puncture tomorrow.

Not really looking for any advice here or anything - just wanted to vent as I'm hefty pissed off at the amount of hassle I've had and cash I've had to shell out.

bad batch of tyres?
unless that pothole was a severe one (claim from council?), 3 tyres with sidewall issues seems a bit suspect..

it takes alot to go through a tyre sidewall; drill or knife. the damage is going to be obvious. a pin-prick hole small enough to let tyres down slowly would likely bend a tool small enough to create such hole.

Bloody hell - what a PIA.

Nearly did the same in the NSX last night. It was only slow, but it was like driving into an inspection pit.

Fortunately, it has compliance pivots on the front, supple suspension & light wheels with a lot of tyre profile. I can see that the roads are in such a state we will soon be unable to use ULP tyres away from the track.

Check the wheel isn't damaged, particularly in the inside where you wouldn't spot it normally.

Good point, Dan. It's now a common phenomenon.

That is bad luck I've noticed even fast roads are getting close to being dangerous with the amount of break up of the road surface in places.

Got back to my car last night after work and the rear tyre had lost air again so went and put some more in it. Other half is charged with taking it to local garage today to get the tyre, valve & alloy checked to see what the problem is. Fingers crossed it's not something expensive since that's four various tyres I've had to shell out for so far in the last month and two on this corner alone.

It's become very dangerous to drive fast round here; you simply never know around which bend several layers of crumble topping have been frosted off. A lot of the insaner politiciunts try to claim this is a safety measure!

I've noticed that recently road surfaces have been properly repaired. I wonder if it's political (very Tory area), wasting money on surface dressing under the last shower & resurfacing under this lot. Or simply that the roads are now so completely f ucked, they've got no choice.

Girlfriend just called from the garage to say the rear tyre (which I just replaced last week and 3 weeks before that too) needs replaced. So that pothole did two of my tyres. I feel sick.
