Ultra reliable beater required.Image not important
As per title.
Since the wisdom of the folks on here was spot on with getting wheels for my retired folks, I thought I would ask again if you can help me out this time.
I need to find myself a sensible POS daily drive.
It can be bloody mundane to drive. I really don't care. I don't give a shit about image either. I'll get something tasty for the weekend for ticking the fun factor.
The goal here is about every day ultra reliability, and navigating the durge that is driving the M4 corridor.
The car will be doing about 90 miles a day 3 days a week.
Aircon, cruise control, sip petrol or diesel in toty toty amounts.
Car can be new, used for a year or so.
Running costs are critical, as is total cost of ownership.
Cheap tax is a bonus.
Automatic is an option too.
Size - don't care. Have other car for load lugging duties.
High scoring Euro NCAP too, as I have become quite attached to having kneecaps and legs.
Budget - Under £10K max.
Bonus points for getting well under budget.
And when I get this... I'll ask for ideas on the weekend car.

Mondeo and the Accord would be 2 i'd be looking at without thinking about it too much
maybe too big? both should see 50-60mpg.
accord is probably slightly better on tax (i've not seen newer vehicles ratings for the last few years), but the accord diesel was liked lots by company car drivers due to their tax costs.

2002 VW Polo Sport TDi PD100. 50mpg in heavy traffic, 60+ on a run even when thrashed. Only problem I've had was a broken coil spring so I replaced the lot with Eibachs.
Even though essentially its a beater I quite like it, good NCAP score, carries two kids easily and has plenty of space in the back for taking stuff to the tip. Its small enough to park in the works car park without having to worry that it will end up smashed to bits.
I was quite lucky to find a one owner low mileage car that had just had new discs, pads and tyres. Tax and insurance are sod all too.
Spending only £3800 leaves a lot to play with.
