UNDERCOVER PLODMOBILE
Have to agree.
I spend more and more time looking at my speedo in fear of straying over the limit, and less time looking for things to avoid. Most roads now have had their "natural" speed limits lowered to stupidly low levels, just to keep the Nanny State happy. It's become harder to judge what the speed limit should be from the type of road.
All in the name of making a fast buck
Gotta pay for all those bankers some how.

In Somerset there has been a huge increase in Double White Lines.
For examle the A39 coast blast to Minehead is almost all no overtaking now and the limit also altered.
The road structure, surface or traffic has NOT altered in any way however.
Makes overtaking now a serious endorsement risk, even if there is only you and some old bint travelling at 30mph as often happens.

I doubt this will make any difference
it's certainly a trend I notice whenever I head west now
you realise overtaking on double whites isnt illegal... aslong as the car your overtaking is doing >10mph under the limit, and you can safely overtake.
thats according to the 'speed awareness course' i attended last week!.

Duff Gen mate, and if you heard it correctly then the instructor is a twat, ring them and complain.

"Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary, provided the road is clear, to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10 mph (16 km/h) or less.

It's don't cross, not don't overtake .... which is why bikes often squeeze past without going over the lines - not that they seem to bother many bikers anyway

My experience of West Sussex traffic Police is that they are very sensible. If you are 'quick but safe' they tell you so and send you on your way.
have been stopped 3 times in last 5 years, was doing nothing serious thank goodness and just got a quiet word of advice and gentle admonishment.

where exactly were they parked up?
Parked about 50 yds from the water company entrance and just where the dual-carraigeway starts - note that the end of 40mph limit signs are sited about 100 yards into the dual section, just when many drivers, anxious to clear the conjested section through the outskirts of the town, accelerate as the single lane road begins to widen, and are thus likely to be +40mph before the dual section and well before the deristriction signs.
