Too much info if you ask me Can't see why all that info is needed. Don't need it for an insurance quote or an HPI check. Don't need it for checking the service details at a friendly dealer etc...

To clone a car all you really need is the make, model, reg and colour. If someone starts asking questions about a car when it's apparently the right colour and reg then they will soon spot the age, wear and tear and other differences never ming checking the VIN

Have to agree. You only need the reg and vin for a HPI check.

Why?

They're offering an insurance policy. They're going to want to make sure that everything stacks up, and to get as much information as they can to guard against exposing themselves to having to pay out, so as to protect their own position.

I think it just means you're dealing with a switched-on prospective purchaser.

Don't worry about it.

My car was cloned off just the registration plate from an Autotrader pic.

Fair point Mark!

Surely though, an unscrupulous buyer could use those details to make, for instance - a stolen car - appear more genuine than it is by forging a V5?

^ Thinking about it; this seems like a lot of effort for a

I recently did an HPI on the 540 before I bought it, and all the time one of those details are missing, it says on your report, in big red letters that you're not eligible for the guarantee until all the details are filled in.

So the guy is just covering his arse, and in turn HPI are covering theirs.
