There is so much more to an engines performance than straight line tests.

You have to remember that most turbo engines produce quite a flat power curve whilst in the lower gears the EK9 would dip from its 190bhp to 150bhp as it changed gear.

The higher up the gears, the closer the ratios are stacked, the less the power curve drop off for the EK9, the more it pulls.

Peak power is only marginally more useful than peak torque.

I have always been rather ashamed of the diesels I've owned

I do like them as prey cars though - drivers of so called performance diesels are easily the most fun to p*** off

A half hour in a remapped 335d might change your opinions on performance oil burners

A 335D costs over 40k even without any options. You remap that and you say sayonara to your warranty. Std it has 280bhp and weighs over 1600kg.

A 335i costs 3k less, has 20bhp more and a usable power band and nice engine note.

I must be missing something?

Wasn't aimed at you directly. I just think they're a waste of space.

Get a diesel that's middle ground as a replacement to the struggle buggy, they do great mpg. But as a replacement to something more... Our cup of cha.. They just do not hit the mark IMO
