Chris, I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee for pretty much the same reasons. I got the 4l petrol engine, auto and get 23mpg on a good run, a lot less if towing and it is in very good condition, so ideal for taking people out in too.

Don'y pay anywhere near asking prices

I have spent two weeks trying to help a friend get rid of an ML 270 CDi

Dealers are nervous - the bad publicity is spreading and many people are feeling the pinch in respect of running costs

A lot of cars like the Merc also seemed to be plagued with expensive and hard to fix problems

Then at least you can say you've a proper capable 4x4 and not some pseudo 4x4 (x5s etc.)

Buy a Jap one, whatever you do. If anything breaks on these things they are expensive to fix.

What's the weight of the Caterham and trailer? You may be able to get away with something like a CRV if it's not too heavy?
