Well some of you may know from previous posts that my GF and I were in the process of moving to NC. I posted pics earlier of me trailering the baby down.
All was well and we made it to our destination AOK.
The following week, my friend Albert and I were going to make the trek again only this time with my Nissan pickup.
Here's us readying the truck and trailer. I know the truck should be facing the other way but the bed was full of stuff so the load was distributed pretty good. So the next morning , Albert and I start out at about 5:00 am. It was pretty foggy out so I was taking it easy through the mountains of PA. I had driven for about 4 and a half to 5 hours and getting up so early, I was pretty sleepy. So Albert asked if I wanted him to drive. He wanted to get a little prctice towing because he'd never towed a trailer with a vehicle before and he was planning on picking up a Z28 or IROC while in NC and trailer it back to NY.
Well after we pulled over and got gas , food and drinks, we were off on our way with Albert at the helm. We got on the onramp and it was an uphill run. When we crested the hill, we started our descent. Well, the trailer started to wag, and Albert let up on the gas. He wsa getting nervous so he applied the brakes and the wagging got even worse. Once I knew we weren't going to ride out of it I started to yell Albert's name.
You know in the movies when they show a crash scene and it happens in slow motion an you can't hear anything but the sound of tires screeching and me yelling Albert's name? Well that's exactly how it was. We were the only car involved. Luckily the trailer broke loose or the Explorer would have defineately been undriveable.
After the tow truck came and cleaned up, we had to rent a U-Haul to get my stuff out of the pickup and continue our trek to NC. only this time with me driving the rest of the way. I couldn't believe there wasn't stuff all over the highway. I guess that Wal-Mart tarp was a pretty god investment. There were only a couple of broken Christmas ornaments...amazing.
So in the end, Alberts insurance ended up paying for the accident, his truck, and my truck and his Uncles trailer.
The blessing part comes in because the insurance company ended up giving me more than I paid for my truck 2 years ago and I got to buy a nice, rust free southern truck. I ended up getting another Nissan only this one was a '97 instead of a '96 and automatic. By the way, seatbelts really do save lives because we were getting thrashe pretty good in the Explorer and when we came to a stop, we both hopped put of the truck pretty shaken, but uninjured.
It wasn't my trailer, it was Albert's uncles. The insurance company gave him $700 to repair it. It wasn't in too bad of shape. I think he paid like $800 for the trailer.
