Default drive to mount michell

We did this last year and had a great time. we had 10 cars last year. i'm shooting for june 5th. place to meet is cherry dale between 8:30 and 9:00 for any late sleepers lol. this drive is a for the most part a allday deal.

most of this drive is on the blue ridge parkway. there are some routes where spirited driving is awesome. plenty of tunnels. the restaurant at mt. michell is great and not too expensive. mt michell is the highest point in the applalachian mountains-----7 to8k feet. spectacular view!

so if your looking for a good drive, good company, and good food, come join us on the 5th.

Cherry Dale, north Greenville, SC, correct ? If so, the original Stax across the street has a great breakfast for those who DON'T sleep in !!

It's a nice day ride - you just need to check the Blue Ridge for closures. Here is the current road conditions from the National Park Service Website:

IN NORTH CAROLINA, the road is closed at the following areas due to storm damage clean up.

MP 305 at US 221/Beacon Heights to MP 316 at Linville Falls Spur Road

MP 334 at Little Switzerland to MP 342 at Victor Crossing

MP 412 at Hwy. 276 to MP 418 at Graveyard Fields Parking Overlook

In addition,

MP 399.7 (Bad Fork Valley Overlook) to 401.7 (Beaverdam Overlook) - Asheville Area.

Due to heavy rains, engineers have determined that a high risk of slides exists in the area, necessitating this emergency closure. The closure will be in place until early July.

Sounds good to me. It looks like most of those closures are north of Mt. Mitchell. BTW, the elevation is 6684' If there are problems on the Parkway between Asheville and Mitchell, then a good alternative way to the summit is NC 80 from outside Marion. There is a nice drive up through Bat Cave to get to Marion.
