Default License Frame Law

As noted below, this law went into effect in December 2009. They had a one year grace period with only warning tickets to be handed out but as of December 1,2010 they will be fining violators $100.00 if caught.

I have the S2KCA frame which is illegal and will be coming off this week.

Just a heads up in case NC members have not heard.

North Carolina requires registration information to be properly displayed on license plates.

Effective as of December 2009, the state of North Carolina banned license plate frames that hamper the view of the state name and year and month insurance information on your license plate. Police officers have noted difficultly in reading vital information because of obstructions from wide frames and plastic glass sleeves.

Well, I'm moving up from Alabama to North Carolina this week and I'll be leaving the car registered to Alabama.

I know the state name on my tag is covered by the tag frame, so I wonder what they'll do.

Early this year a friend was pulled due to his plate frame (he lives in AL also) and was in NC visiting. I would take it off to be safe. They were pulled for it, then made to take a breathalyzer, as the officer said he smelled beer on his wife, etc.

Yea the cops have pretty much been ignoring it for the past year, no warnings, not much talk about the law, hoping that when the one year grace period ends they will get to write a nice amount of tickets and make some cash which the state is short on now. Thanks for the reminder!

Yup. Traffic laws are not often so much about safety as they are about increasing state coffers. So unless you want to increase the state's expenditure funds, take Lee's advice and pull any trim around your plates...

Yup - trying to keep a low profile so they can grab as much money as they can come January.

I thought it was pretty much common sense that a frame that obscures the month and year stickers (or other vital info) would be illegal.....

guess some people just need to be told

Yeah, the stickers are clearly visible on my tag, but with the combination of the Barber Museum tag and the Tail of the Dragon plate frame, the state name is covered. If I had the regular Alabama plate, I think I would not have an issue.
